OUR MEMBERS' WORKOUTS REALLY WORK

We knew that our members were interested in eating as healthy as possible, had a curiosity about fitness related stories, and could appreciate the great results and efforts of other active people. We hope the recipes, success stories, and observations of our world provide an entertaining addition to your life. We begin this edition with the inspirational story of two of our members Gloria Torres and Greg Babcock, Jr.

Gloria did not begin exercising to trim her waist or to boost her energy level, she started because her health depended on it. Two years ago, Gloria’s doctor told her that she was diabetic. Her blood sugar was dangerously high, and if she did not change her diet and lose weight, she would be placed on insulin for the rest of her life. That was enough motivation for her. Gloria knew that she needed to start becoming more active and eating better. Even though Gloria had never led the “fitness lifestyle”, she tackled the dilemma of her diabetes with the outlook of a seasoned exercise veteran. Her main concern was getting healthier, not fitting into a new dress. When she took the focus off the scale and the tape measure, Gloria was the most successful. Gloria was consistent with the efforts and frequency of her workouts, and she judged the success of her program on the basis of how she was feeling each day, not on what the scale was telling her. Even though she missed a few days in the gym and cheated a little with her food sometimes, Gloria never gave up. Ten months later, Gloria went from a size 20 to a size 14. Her blood sugar returned to the normal range, and she hopes to be off all diabetes medication very soon. If ten months seems like a long time, Gloria feels that it took her that long to literally change her life. She is using the club and eating in ways she honestly feels can be continued forever. We are very proud to have Gloria as a member, and it makes us feel good that she took control of her health and changed it for the better. Congratulations, Gloria!

Greg Babcock has an equally inspiring story to tell. A few years removed from high school, Greg found himself weighing more than he felt was healthy. His six foot frame was carrying 311 pounds and 26% body fat. His blood pressure was elevated, and he felt too winded during physical activity; certainly for a man of 21. He had enough of feeling out and shape, and Greg knew this was probably the best time in his life to do something about it. During the past six months, Greg has truly transformed his body and his mind. The physical accomplishments are impressive enough: losing sixty nine pounds, nine inches on his waist, five inches on his hips, lowering his blood pressure to a normal level, and seeing the tremendous stamina and flexibility improvements that come with such remarkable weight loss. However, Greg also believes his mental gains are just as important. At over 300 pounds, Greg often felt lethargic and had difficulty just motivating himself to be active. Now his energy level is as high as it has ever been, and he feels like a different person. An admitted overeater, Greg has reduced his calories and modified his food intake to a place that can be maintained forever. His stress level is down, and he counts his trips to the mall to shop for new clothes among his favorite activities. His friends, family, and everyone on the staff knows how hard Greg has worked, and we can see the payoff in the perpetual smile he carries on his face.
